When the owners of this Beacon Hill property hired us to transform their underutilised backyard, they had one simple request: they wanted a dedicated space in the sun where they could play board games.

The rear of the home had a beautiful overlook over a lush valley, but there was nowhere for the couple to sit and enjoy the view, just a set of rotting steps and small patch of grass. So, after visiting the property to chat through a few different options, we decided the best way to utilise the space was to widen the existing doorway and replace the stairs with a new outdoor deck.

First, we removed the old door and installed aluminium stacking doors, which deliver unobstructed views and slide away neatly. We then built an elevated deck using Merbau timber that sits flush with the new doors, creating a seamless flow that’s perfect for indoor/outdoor entertaining. Merbau’s high durability, resistance to splintering and range of sizes makes it a great – and affordable – choice for decking projects.

Knowing that the couple planned to use the deck to play board games, we suggested adding a built-in bench and table to make the space as practical as possible. The couple loved this nook so much that we returned a few weeks later to construct some matching stools.

The couple love using their new deck for socialising with friends and family, eating al fresco and, of course, beating each other at Scrabble.
