Meet Maia
Maia is the backbone of Above Building for all things operational, marketing, innovation, HR and so much more.
She has a passion for creating and designing beautiful homes for families and is an absolute super woman. So it seemed fitting to ask her a few questions so you could get to know her as well!
What inspired you to be in the building industry?
When I met Sam over 6 years ago, Above Building was in it’s infancy. Sam had a logo, an ABN, all his tools and a lot of passion. We would often ponder our dreams and he would talk endlessly about creating the Above Building that we are now. I worked in Philanthropy and Fundraising, building my own career and loving every minute. I always looked at my career as collecting and acquiring skills I would inevitably use in my role at Above.
From the very beginning, I have been part of Above Building. Leveraging Sam’s carpentry skills for my own gain. In the first year, I had managed to convince Sam to help me put in a new kitchen bench and pave the entire backyard of my rental property in exchange for Above Building’s first website, social media accounts and branding guide.
As our relationship got stronger and Sam’s dreams started slowly turning into a reality, the pull to join the as an official employee and full time team became stronger.
I eventually left my career in Philanthropy and Fundraising and joined the team as Above’s Business Development and Operations Manager.

Movie title that best describes your life?
Yes man. I think one of the key successes in life has been that I have always been open to new opportunities. A lot of the big decisions I have made in my life have started with a yes, and sometimes to my detriment, I have figured out the finer details later.
I like trying new things, I enjoy being innovative and I always want to gain new experiences and just have a go. This is translated across my approach to business and my personal life.
How would the team describe you in three words?
Confident, assertive, and adventurous.
What’s the funniest or most unusual situation you’ve experienced in your job?
Every Christmas I try and organise something fun for the team to do, that is team building and a good day away from our usual day to day. Last year I organised for the team to go Canyoning.
I soon found myself in a wetsuit, held together with several ropes, helmet and GoPro strapped to my head, being the only female in the company of 10 men, abseiling down a 15 ft waterfall.
It’s safe to say this year we’re having a BBQ… at home.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love my family more than anything in the world. As long as I am with them, I am happy.
I love to travel, eat good food, drink nice wine, be outdoors, play sport and experience new things.
